Why Neonatal Care?
The birth of a newborn should be one of the happiest moments for any family. Unfortunately approximately 15% of newborns will need some form of neonatal care.
For our smallest patients, it is more important than ever that we have the right tools to treat them. The New East Wing Building at Taranaki Base hospital will be home to the Methanex Neonatal Unit - a 12 bed neonatal unit dedicated ot the care of newborns in the region. With your generosity, we can take this standard neonatal unit and bring about enhancements to make it the best it can be

The Methanex Neonatal Unit
Level 2 of the New East Wing Building will be home to the new maternity unit and the Methanex Neonatal Unit. With 12 dedicated rooms for neonatal care, all having individual cots and space for parents to stay with baby overnight, the Methanex Neonatal unit will be able to care for the majority of Taranki newborns that need special care.
We want the Methanex Neonatal Unit to be the best it can be. By donating to our campaign you are committing to a desire to see more babies treated locally, creating less stress for the baby, parents and whānau. Whilst there will always be a need for the most vulnerable babies to be transferred to Wellington or Auckland, your donation will allow us to provide the following locally:
- Neonatal unit better integrated with maternity
- Vital equipment therapeutic hypothermia treatment
- Suitable facilities for parents to stay with babies
